Annual Table Quiz - Thursday 16th April

Hello everyone,

The quiz is being held this Thursday (16th April) in the Old Bar. Sign-ups start at 7pm. I apologise for the short notice. There were some scheduling difficulties.

There will be a full bar available. Teams will consist of four people. Entry will be four euros per person. Don’t worry if you don’t have a team ready you can still show up and we can make up teams on the day.

Prizes! We have lots! We have four of each of these for the three winning teams.

1st Prize : 250gb Maxtor USB harddrive. The absence of power leads and its small size mean it’s very portable. Portable data \o/

2nd Prize :  Sega Megadrives with 15 inbuilt games including Sonic and Goldenaxe. There is also a slot for cartridges. It is region-free and comes with two controllers. Retro goodness!

3rd Prize : Red 4gb USB sticks and boxes of Lucky Charms (yes, the cereal). Marshmallows in cereal. Oh the ingenuity of it all.

Last Place : You’ll have to endure another year with us as you’ll get your following year’s membership for free.

The raffle will cost two euros per ticket or five euros for a strip. The prize is a brand new Acer Aspire One netbook. It is blue and very pretty. The specs in this link are the same but it has 1gb of RAM.

We will have spot prizes on the night as well.

The bar will be open until 11 so you can stick around and mock the losing teams over a pint.

Please bring a student ID if you are a current student or a passport or a driver’s license if you are an associate as the bar is *VERY* strict on this. We will need to sign in associates so this is why ID is needed.

If you have any questions you can email me or harass me on IRC.

See you then!

My first events blog thingy

Hey hey,

To those of you who missed the RedBrick in the bar session last Tuesday : you missed a good night! Elephant and I were auctioned off to cook for someone, Elephant will wear a dress to college on this coming Tuesday, Moju lost his eyebrows and our SU president got naked. The SVP annual slave auction was as fun as ever. We’ll be at the Old Bar every Tuesday from 8. We’ll be wearing our RedBrick hoodies or we’ll have a sign. Come say hi!

Christmas! We have the upstairs of the Slipper booked for our Xmas nerdfest. Socs that are taking part this year are RedBrick, Games, Comics, Strange Things(scifi), books and Art. It’s a night to celebrate nerdiness and party together one more time before the holidays. 3euro Fosters and Cashel’s cider. There’ll be a raffle, prizes for the most appropriately dressed(fancy dress and geeky t-shirts encouraged!) and a prize for the most inappropriately dressed individual. We’ll have a very special guest along too.

Ice-Skating! We have 30 tickets for our members to go ice-skating on Thursday 4th of December. We’ll be going to 7up on ice at the RDS in Ballsbridge and afterwards we’ll head to the Woolshed for a bit of warmth and a few drinks. Getting there from DCU is easy: get a 4 or a 4a from the Ballymun Road entrance. They’ll provide the skates and everything. All you need to do is sign-up is click the following link:

Long blog entry about everything (ish)

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this blog. I thought I’d just write to tell you about what’s going on at the moment, and what our plans for the next while are.

Firstly, admin stuff. CSD (or ISS as they now seem to be called) had downtime last night to do something with their core router. Redbrick took advantage of this and performed some long-overdue maintenance on our own network.  We installed our new 48-port Cisco Catalyst 3560 gigabit switch (named “Hadron”), which will allow us to replace enzyme plus the other two (or was it three?) unmanaged switches. Hadron will be split up into vlans, each vlan taking on the role of one of our old switches. The racks were also recabled, to clean up the physical mess that was left after the chaos during the summer.

Minerva’s second OS disk was replaced (for free under warranty), as it was showing up as faulty within software RAID. The software array was rebuilt and seems to be working perfectly now. Hooray for RAID1. You may have noticed that some applications had been loading slowly over the last week or so on Minerva (due to the degraded array); this should fix that.

Admin stuff

Firstly, Redbrick just won best website at the clubs and socs awards, so congragulations to d_fens and the webgroup. On a slightly more sobering note, we’re going to have ~2 hours of downtime for murphy (and therefore all www) on saturday, as we have to take down murphy to resize /var/tmp to give us somewhere on murphy to fit databases. We should be starting about 16:00. We’re also going to move the vhosts over, which means that these will be down for a period, probably ~4 hours. Also, anyone who’s databases are pointed at localhost should change them at this point.

Anyway, good luck to all those going to the BICS.

Cian
